Why is drawing cartoon haram?

Before you answer, read. I know in the olden days people created statues (+ other artworks) and worshipped them. My mom told me that in the day of the judgement, God will ask me to bring my art to life. That said...I do not, in any way, plan on worshipping my art. I am not saying that my "cartoons" are better than God's creation (obviously they aren't). I am not planning on bringing my artwork to life. I have no intentions with my artwork. I only draw because I enjoy drawing it. I want an exact verse from the Quran where it says I cannot draw.
